David Berman's music was an inspiration to me, and to so many people, for so many years. I was in the studio working on other music when I got the news he had died. As I thought about him over the next several days I couldn't get this song in particular out of my head - it was the first song of his I'd ever heard. I remembered how he once said that he liked the idea of his music being "in other peoples' instruments", and that it was music anyone could play. I heard that in my head the next day as I played this, feeling a new feeling every time I switched instruments over and over as the tracks added up, rediscovering this beautiful moment of song from when I was so young, with so much to learn and so many to learn from. It was a moment of closeness with someone I never got to meet but who impacted me beyond anything I could ever try to express in any words of my own. I am forever grateful to David Berman and his art.
